My Salute To Veterans
My Salute To Veterans – My Personal Brand #5. While I specifically refer to my father’s service, his story is shared by many vets. They all served our country.
My Salute To Veterans
My Salute To Veterans – My Personal Brand #5. So today I wanted to take some time and dedicate it to all who have served. Our military vets that have served our great nation during times of war and peace. Because I believe that they are one of our greatest national treasures.
Thank you!
As you likely know, today is Veteran’s Day. Originally known as Armistice Day, to commemorate the end of World War I. Now it is a Federal Holiday to celebrate all those that have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. And it is distinct from Memorial Day, which honors all those who died while in military service.
Thank you for your service!
My father, Charles “Skip” Snyder Jr., served in the United States Navy during Vietnam. He served onboard USS Ranger (CVA-61), a Forrestal-class fleet carrier; the same ship prominent in movies like Top Gun and Star Trek IV. So in January 1968, he wasn’t in any of those movies or the TV shows like Baa Baa Black Sheep and the Six Million Dollar Man.
Regardless, my dad served during a time when his ship was conducting extensive air operations over North Vietnam. I was born in March 1968, while he was still over there serving our country. And I admire him for that because I’m sure he much rather would have been here at home.
But this isn’t just for my dad, whom I have a growing deep respect for. I have many family members and friends that have served in all branches. Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy and I even know a few that have served in the Coast Guard. However, they all have my appreciation and gratitude.
But some would include me in that
It’s true, I served in the Air Force for a short time. I went through all the motions and did what I had to do, but I was there for all the wrong reasons. So when I found out that I was basically told what I wanted to hear to get me in, I wasn’t a happy camper. But that’s another story for another time.
As a result, if I’m to be recognized for something, I believe it should be my service as a firefighter. Or as my agency continues to grow and evolve, being recognized for the good I have done there. No, I feel today should be about my father, my family and my friends that have served.
Thank you all for your service!
