More Thoughts On Re-Branding
More Thoughts On Re-Branding – Charles Snyder Raw #8. Today I share some more of my adventures with renaming my business. As well as some of the issues I have found along the way. In fact, right after I published the last post, Re-Branding Your Business Takes Time – Charles Snyder Raw #7, I found yet another issue!

It was a loose nut behind my keyboard!
But the new problem didn’t become evident until I set up a redirect for our old domain name. I even show you what I’m talking about in my video today as I’m actually fixing it on the back-end. Good stuff!
Here’s what happened
What happened is that I am using WordPress and I exported the old website to the new one using a different domain name. The problem is that WordPress does not automatically update all of the URLs and that leads to several issues. Without updating all of the URLs, you end up with broken links and images that don’t display.
Broken links lead to an even bigger problem with search engines and losing your placement in displayed results. It also leads to frustrated website visitors that leave your website and may never return again. As a result, this is not a good situation and I need to get it fixed fast!
So this leads us to where we are at today; fixing even more problems. But you would think that after 20 years of web development, I’d remember something like this. Since I didn’t remember, hopefully, some of you will learn and benefit from my mistakes.
The takeaway
However, you may be asking yourself, why even use WordPress if this is an issue? Well, to be honest with you, the thought has crossed my mind and I have an answer for that. While this is a pain in the you-know-what and I have some work to do fixing it; WordPress does make it much easier.
So as I talk about in the video, doing this 20 years ago with static web pages would take even more time and a lot more work. The secret to re-branding is in the planning. While I had the redirects in place for the main pages, the following must be accounted for too:
- Categories
- Posts
- Tags
- Archives
- Authors and more!
And that’s not mentioning the hundreds or even thousands of links that are created internally. Or the external links from your social media posts, etc. So it literally can get into the thousands with just 100 or so posts on a blog.
