Just stop with the panic!

Just remember, the news is basically in the business of scaring the crap out of people. The more fear, anger, and hatred they can stir up in people, the more views they get and the more advertising they can sell. All you have to do is generally take a look at the reporting about Corona Virus.

A disease with about a 99.97% recovery rate!

But how do you market right now?

Regardless of the news, the panic and the fear is real. Like I mention in Covid-19 Quarantine Crisis, people are scared right now. But small business owners are really feeling the crunch.

So the question then becomes, how do you market without looking like an insensitive jerk or an oblivious idiot? Should you sit back and quietly wait for this to all pass and hope for the best?

I say, Hell no! Now is the best time to keep marketing because there will be a rebound. But you need to do it in a way that is sympathetic to your customers and where they are at emotionally.

3 quick tips for marketing right now

You should definitely watch my entire video, but here are my three main points or takeaways to get you started:

  1. Focus on building your list. Now may not be the best of times to ask for the sale directly or launch a new campaign. However, it is the perfect time to build your list. People are in an information-gathering mode right now, because what else is there to do? So don’t slow your marketing efforts, but definitely tweak them to add more value.
  2. Check your message and your tone. Right now you want to speak with more empathy, avoiding extremes of being too silly or too fearful. Since the news is doing a bang-up job of scaring people as it is.
  3. Check your visuals too. Images or videos of large crowds is definitely out of step with the quarantine. And many people are stuck at home or even working from home, so stuffy professional presentations are definitely out of place too. Mirror their reality.
