Social Media Marketing 101 – 5 Minutes With Charles #21. When you were growing up, did you ever play the game, truth or dare? Or did one of your childhood friends ever ‘double-dog dare you’ to do something? Well here’s a dare that just might make you a lot of money!
I double-dog dare you!
Aside from the reference to the kid getting his tongue frozen to a metal flagpole in ‘A Christmas Story’ this is about a conversation. OK, it was more like an argument where one DJ was desperately trying to justify his failure. As in failure to use social media to get himself a steady stream of sales.
The background story
Another friend and long-time customer made a post on Facebook about paying for leads. There were a lot of responses, most stating that buying leads could cost as much as $50 each. Now understand that almost all of those in this conversation are Wedding DJs.
But the kick to the head here is that each DJ that would bid for a lead was paying up to $50 each time. So for example, if 10 DJs all want the same bride’s contact info, Thumbtack is making $500. And you can bet your last dollar that Thumbtack will show that lead to a lot more than 100 DJs.
That’s f*cking ridiculous!!
Enter the excuse-maker
So jumping forward a bit into this conversation, I was explaining to some of these DJs that if they’re paying more than $3 – $5 per lead is way too much. But a few of them weren’t buying it and one, in particular, was downright obstinate about it. Also, he was making every excuse under the sun.
However, the moral of the story is that if you don’t know how to use a screwdriver, it won’t work. Also, if you don’t know how to use a ratchet, it won’t work for you. So yes, if you don’t know how to use the tools to market on social media, it won’t work for you either.
Social Media Marketing 101: how to win!
In summary, there are a lot of business owners and marketers out there that don’t know how to use social media. Case in point, WordStream is surveying more than 200 digital marketing agencies each year. Ironically, more than 50% of those agencies spend less than 25% of their time marketing on social media.
Yet not so surprising (at least to me) is that more than 80% of said agencies are worried about keeping their doors open next year.
But if you don’t know how to build shelves in your closet, you hire a carpenter, right? And if you don’t know how to rebuild an engine, you take your car to a mechanic, right? So if you don’t know how to use social media to get more customers, what are you going to do about it?
