Multiple Domains – 5 Minutes With Charles #18. Every so often, we get a good question from one of our clients. For example, is it a good idea to have more than one domain name for your business website. But another variation of that is, do you have to choose between one or the other?

From a search engine optimization (SEO) standpoint, there are benefits to having more than one domain name for your business. So yes, you can have and use two or more domains. But you need to be careful how you use those domain names.

As with anything else in life, there are pros and cons to having more than one domain name for your business website. Or for every other kind of website for that matter. So you have to also understand the way that Google and other search engines, handle it.
But the key factor here is that Google tends to set the precedent and most of the other major search engines follow suit. So in a nutshell, Google recommends that you do not have duplicate content. What that means is the same content on two or more websites.
Also, when you duplicate your content across two or more websites, you are diluting your SEO. Additionally, if your content is ‘weak’ and two or more copies, your search engine placement will be even lower or non-existent.
Multiple Domains: some common sense
You will find plenty of opinions that do not all agree when it comes to SEO. And more than a few that site other opinions that match their own. But at the end of the day, Google probably has a much better idea of what Google will or will not index.
So here are the Google’s Top 5 reasons to get more than one domain name:
- Misspelling – Complex or uncommon names means a higher chance that someone makes a typo. If that is the case, also buying domains that cover common typos can automatically forward them to the proper one.
- Copycats – If a scumbag sets up similar-looking or sounding domains, they are stealing potential sales from you. To eliminate this, buy potential looks-like and sounds-like names.
- Name Change – If your business used to have a different name, it’s a good idea to keep the old domain as well as having a matching new one. But you should also forward the old domain to the new one.
- Niche-Descriptive – Different people think differently and may perceive your business and products or services that way too. Sometimes, having a few domains that cover this, forwarding to your main domain name is essential and smart.
- TLDs – New Top Level Domains are being introduced all of the time. For example, .com, .net, and .org have been around for a long time. But more recently you can also get .me, .biz, .us, and many more.
However, the biggest takeaway here is this; if you have more than one domain name, point all the extras to one website. This is called forwarding or redirecting and is fairly easy to do. But the concept here is many names with one destination.
